It started with homeschooling

July 29, 2009

by Erika My sister and I in a photo booth. I think we were 12 & 13. She’s older than I am. My childhood from the time I was born to the age of 14 was pretty much normal and mainstream. I grew up in a Christian home, going to church every Sunday, taking part in VBS in the summers, going to public school (though I went a few years to a Christian private school when I first started school), playing with the neighbor kids, watching cartoons in the morning….all the things that kids did Full post …

Patriarchy Across Cultures: Living in the Material World

July 19, 2009

by Tapati Krishna and Arjuna on the battlefield, used on album by George Harrison I can blame it all on George Harrison.   I and my friend Carolyn were teenagers of the early 1970s, devoted to the music of the Beatles and of George Harrison in particular. We were also searching for the meaning of life, like countless others before us. We combed the library for information on various religions and encountered books like A Soul’s Journey by Peter Richelieu (unfortunately out of print now). We learned about reincarnation, astral bodies, karma, and transmigration of Full post …

Connecting The Dots: Patriarchy Across Cultures

July 12, 2009

by Tapati    Hare Krishna temple in St. Louis, 1975. Tapati is in the center front row in a blue print sari. When a friend referred me to the blog “No Longer Quivering,” she knew why I would resonate with the posts I found there. Like me, she had once belonged to the Hare Krishna Movement, though years after my own involvement. We immediately saw many parallels between the lives of Christian women following the Quiverfull teachings. Vyckie and Laura described their past lives in ways that sounded like many of the young Hare Krishna Full post …

Lo, children ARE a blessing …

July 9, 2009

by Vyckie   It is true ~ I am abundantly blessed …   No Longer Quivering has been up and running for less than 4 months ~ and in that short time, I think the blog and forums have already developed quite a community to provide a fair amount of stories and info. which illustrate some of the very real problems with the quiverfull worldview and lifestyle. Just this morning, however ~ as I was looking at the posts here and trying to get a feel of the overall tone of NLQ ~ I noticed Full post …

July 8, 2009

by Erika Here in the US, we celebrated our nation’s independence and freedom this past Saturday, the 4th of July. This particular holiday always makes me think of my own Independence Day. We had a BBQ with family and friends this past Saturday and while we were sitting inside to stay out of the rain, I was telling my friends about the jumper that my sister had made for herself back when she was 18. I had recently posted the picture of our family on my Facebook account and one of my friends asked, “Does Full post …

NLQ FAQ: How can I help my "Quiverfull" friend?

July 3, 2009

by Vyckie   Q: How can I help my “Quiverfull” friend? I have a good friend who is really into the quiverfull/patriarchy lifestyle. She is always careful to appear cheerful and happy with her family life, but I have often suspected that things are not quite as rosy as she wants everyone to believe. After reading the stories here on NLQ, I am more concerned than ever, especially for her children who are very well-behaved and respectful but who seem to be sending out “distress signals” like Angel did in Vyckie’s story. My friend is Full post …
