[...] This poor woman was a brainwashed adherent of the Quiverfull movement, and she offered herself on a platter to an abusive, controlling husband (the story has more installments, guaranteed to make your head explode with rage). PUAs love stories where an alpha buys his woman Skittles for her birthday, or the one about Steve Jobs buying himself some shirts instead of buying Joan Baez the expensive dress she was admiring, but this guy must have been an uber-alpha: while his wife was enduring an agonizing and dangerous home birth, he defrosted an entire stack of homemade waffles and loitered in the kitchen, munching away and licking maple syrup from his fingers. And it’s not just protestant women who are vulnerable to these types: one of my favorite Catholic bloggers was roped in by a white knight who got scary when she stepped off the pedestal. He required her–just to choose one example–to wear elbow-length gloves and carry a parasol whenever she went outdoors. The more I think about it, it is clear that younger women are usually the most vulnerable to control-freaks, and I’m sure we’ve all heard of cases that didn’t involve traditional religion at all. (Anyone remember a girl who wrote to Salon about her environmentalist boyfriend who wouldn’t let her own a refrigerator?)
