I used to think this was true- but apparently Michelle gets pregnant first, then her milk dries up. I read of another woman who said she thought she was quiverfull until her seventh baby was born in seven years, with all signs pointing to seven more in the following seven years. Apparently lactational amennorrhea isn't as prevalent as I thought. (Not a Duggar fan at all, but I gotta be fair about this accusation. I found the info on a Michelle Duggar interview about breastfeeding.) I think a more likely scenario is that they night wean early or do strict feeding schedules which interfere with natural spacing. That would match the Pearl/TTUAC type atmosphere suspected by most here.

The problem is that there is no convenient way to refer to the network of ideas that the Message, Gothard, Vision Forum, Nancy Campbell, Stacy MacDonald and others participate in. They all call themselves evangelicals. Mark Driscoll styles himself as a contemporary evangelical, yet is also part of the network - how would you describe him? "Fundamentalist" has a set of meanings attached to it that don't match this new wave very well; fundamentalists, for instance, were the ones who fought against the Pentecostal emphasis on miracles and revelation in the early 20th century. This network can't be identified by denomination because they often have none, or are mixed up in several. The "Christian patriarchy movement" is the closest I think we can get, but it doesn't encompass the fact that evangelical Christians are the ones inventing purity balls and pledges and stressing modesty. Not even all of them homeschool.

In short, I refer to these phenomena as part of evangelical culture because that's what people in these groups identify with. The thing about evangelicals is many of them are quite happy to accept the majority of what Message believers believe, and yet sneer at Message people because of the whole "prophet thing." (I don't think the Message is special enough to have its own "brush.") The only thing I can say to evangelicals who don't believe in modesty culture is that I'm not talking about them. If the shoe doesn't fit...

Exactly this is what I meant. Thanks, NewLife.

Much of what I write is about the effects of Christian patriarchy on children and adolescents. None of it excuses the men who create these doctrines.

But The Duggars don't even truly let nature take its course. Michelle weans her children early so she will be fertile again. So, she manipulates her body in the opposite direction most women in this country do. If she did the more natural thing and nursed for a couple of years she would have so many children.

Kirsten

Regarding Hebrews 13:17 you should have referred the reader to the original Greek which a direct translation reads "be ye being persuaded" and not "Obey". The reason the English is translated as "Obey" is due to medieval Roman Catholicism tampering with the Latin in order to justify their ruling over Western Europe. This is one of the items that the reformers failed to address and in John Calvin's case used to his advantage with his theocratic rule in Geneva.

What Hebrews 13:17 really says is that we should give careful consideration to what church leaders say and why we should namely because they will be held to a much stricter account by God on the day of accounting. However we are not obliged to always do what they say. I learned this after leaving a church where the minister felt he needed to control everything in the church similar to a CEO and the Pastor at my new church found it necessary to tell the old Pastor that he was being a dictator.

Thanks for such a thorough study, Kristen!
If you think about it, Complementarianism is placing someone between women and God, practically usurping Jesus' place in her life. Scary!

Anecdotically, I was travelling with my SIL and her now (officially) husband to the marriage office, and on the way we got into the role of elders in church. They believe elders ought to be submitted to and one ought to bring important decisions to them for them to not just counsel, but actually tell you what to do. For example, if a married couple is considering divorce, they ought to bring their case before the elders and have them decide for them what they should do.
This, and the "can we...." chapter in Mark Driscoll's marriage book got me to thinking about the other side of authority. Why are we so eager to let someone else decide for us what is right and what is not? Why are Christians so dependent on the opinions of the leaders? (because it's often just their opinion!)

"the group denies payment for treatment of any conditions resulting from sinful behavior" -quoted from above.

That don't sound Christian to me. If Jesus denied "payment for treatment of any conditions resulting from sinful behavior ”, He would not have died on a cross.

----
A position more likely to kill a woman than to save a child is not even pro-life. The mother is a life too!
