Lo, children ARE a blessing …

July 9, 2009

by Vyckie   It is true ~ I am abundantly blessed …   No Longer Quivering has been up and running for less than 4 months ~ and in that short time, I think the blog and forums have already developed quite a community to provide a fair amount of stories and info. which illustrate some of the very real problems with the quiverfull worldview and lifestyle. Just this morning, however ~ as I was looking at the posts here and trying to get a feel of the overall tone of NLQ ~ I noticed Full post …

NLQ FAQ: How can I help my "Quiverfull" friend?

July 3, 2009

by Vyckie   Q: How can I help my “Quiverfull” friend? I have a good friend who is really into the quiverfull/patriarchy lifestyle. She is always careful to appear cheerful and happy with her family life, but I have often suspected that things are not quite as rosy as she wants everyone to believe. After reading the stories here on NLQ, I am more concerned than ever, especially for her children who are very well-behaved and respectful but who seem to be sending out “distress signals” like Angel did in Vyckie’s story. My friend is Full post …

Dear Carri ~ an open letter from one traumatized "mom of many" to another

June 29, 2009

by Vyckie I was recently interviewed by a Minnesota news station in relation to the sad case of Carri Chmielewski ~ a “quiverfull” mother whose planned unassisted home birth of baby #9 ended tragically. As one who has been in similar high-risk situations with three of my pregnancies ~ I wrote a piece expressing my initial reaction (sickened and mortified) to the news that Carri’s baby boy had died due to an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) ~ a situation which might not have developed had she sought competent medical treatment earlier in her pregnancy when Full post …

RE: Carri & Benaiah Chmielewski ~ I am sickened and mortified

June 22, 2009

by Vyckie Through the Free Jinger forums, I was recently introduced to a blog by a quiverfull woman named Carrie who holds to a lot of the same lifestyle beliefs which our family subscribed to back in our “quivering days.” I was immediately interested because at the time that I first started reading her blog, Carrie was overdue with twins (she thought) ~ planning an unassisted home birth. This so reminded me of my own experience ~ with Hazelle (whom I attempted to have at home after 3 c-sections), Andrew (who was born at home Full post …

No-Win Scenario #3 ~ Women can’t "have it all" but QF women can do it all

June 11, 2009

Me ~ Feb. 2007. Too exhausted to get out of bed ~ still, the work had to be done … There’s quite a discussion about feminism going on over on the NLQ forums ~ and it’s got me thinking about another no-win situation for Quiverfull moms. As a faithful Proverbs 31 woman of God, I was very concerned about my reputation ~ not for the sake of what people thought about *me,* of course ~ because, you know ~ I was very careful not to seek the “approval of men rather than God.” No ~ Full post …

NLQ FAQ: What is Quiverfull?

June 9, 2009

by Vyckie   Q: What is “Quiverfull?” “Quiverfull” is a convenient, though I believe, somewhat unfortunate term which we’re using at No Longer Quivering to describe a family lifestyle which is growing in popularity among evangelical Christians ~ particularly those who home educate their children. Quiverfull ~ is the idea that truly godly families will “trust the Lord” with their family planning. Children are viewed as unmitigated blessings (“As arrows in the hand of the mighty man, so are the children of ones youth, happy is the man who hath his quiver full of them”) Full post …

NLQ FAQ: Custody Issues for ex-Quiverfull Parents

May 29, 2009

By “Dogemperor“ NLQ Frequently Asked Questions Q. What resources are available for former Quiverfull parents seeking to retain/gain legal custody of their children? A. The following guest column by NLQ reader, “Dogemperor” addresses this issue in detail: Firstly, I’d like to thank Vyckie very much for asking me to do this guest column–and a minor caveat or two here: I am not a lawyer, merely someone who grew up in a “New Apostolic Reformation” coercive religious group that now tends to be a heavy promoter of the Quiverfull stuff. Anyways, Vyckie had notified me that Full post …
