Since the main goal for the NLQ Blogathon is to introduce and promote the Take Heart Project, each day we will feature a brief “Take Heart Project” post to highlight the group’s goals, resources, needs, etc.
A goal of the Take Heart Project is to provide education to counselors and therapists on the unique attributes of patriarchal religious thought.
For women and children in this tradition who are abused, the spiritual component adds an enormous, nearly insurmountable weight to the abuse suffered. Though leaving any abusive situation is never as easy as “pick up and go,” those who want to depart a spiritually abusive situation often find themselves forced to not only leave husband, father, or entire family, but also their religious communities and God– or the only idea of God they have ever known.
The Take Heart Project seeks to be supportive of exiting Quiverfullers in whatever religious and familial paths they choose. Not all QFers will leave their husbands, many will remain Christian. THP will provide resources and encouragement to ease the transition for QF women into healthier ways of relating to men and to God.
Even counselors who specialize in treating abuse victims may not understand the particulars of the deeply held religious beliefs that must be violated in order for these women and children to seek help. By documenting and sharing the stories of people who have escaped, the Take Heart Project will enable a network of therapists to help treat the wounds of abuse in the most knowledgeable, caring way possible.
